The Caged Bird Sings

Oh so intellectual baby.....
Inadequacies, insecurities and hang-ups. These three words ring in my mind like church bells. Inadequacies, insecurities and hang-ups. As a child transitioning into a teenager and a teenager transitioning into an adult, you are faced with inadequacies and insecurities, almost like a mirror, the scars left from hang-ups that you are forced to deal with as an adult. With new found maturity as an adult you learn to confront and attack those hang-ups head on, salicylic acid to help prevent and treat. It stings a little, but overall it makes you a healthy person who can actively participate in healthy friendships, relationships and acquaintances.

Such a natural process is, however, crucial in that there are adults who are "late bloomers." The followers, the wannabees, the teens that would do absolutely anything to be in that quintessential limelight. If they weren't extremely overt they hung their head low and schemed to get into the almighty "in-crowd." The in-crowd scoffed at their cries for attention. These kids never really got the concept that it was all about being comfortable in their own skin. They used their adolescense as a means to camouflage, to be seen and never heard. Rather than work through their inadequacies and insecurities they allowed them to fester into adulthood, uglied by hang-ups.

As adults the insecure bunch finds ways to blend in with the masses. They clique up with one another and seek revenge on everyone who seems happy with themselves and comfortable in their skin. Like wolves in sheep's clothing they infiltrate, smiles and well wishes mask jealousy and envy and feelings of sabotage. Being surrounded by that much negative energy, how can you surpass and overcome without feeding into the never ending wheel of cynicism? Does triumphing become the ultimate 180, and now it is you who is seeking for approval? The million dollar question still remains: When does everyone decide its time to let it go and grow up?
